The one where I run a table of HOTT at a mini-convention.
I mentioned in the past few posts that I had a game-day coming up.
Well, it came and went by fast!
Well, it came and went by fast!
First things first, I had a blast hosting some Hordes of The Things during the day. In the end I had 3 people trying it out and a total of 5 games. It honestly doesn't sound as much in writing, but considering only one had previous wargaming experience (Andreas in the picture above who plays 40K) while the others pretty much never touched a miniature, it was a hoot and a half to teach them.
Suffice to say, I recruited 3 more HOTT-players during the day and all live withing 15 minutes from the Factorium. Not bad at all!
I was however really bad at taking pictures during the event as usual. I completely forgot to line up my armies and do real presentation-shots but it is what it is. The lightning where I had the models setup was really bad for phone-photography anyways. Will try to do it when I unpack everything later on.
Oh yeah, it's all in boxes now.
Because... Im hosting another HOTT-demo in a couple weeks at another convention!
Once home and awake on sunday I decided to talk to the guys running Baycon (small convention in Västervik, last weekend of november) and ask if they wanted a small side-event during the con. They said they are more than happy to have me, so here we go.
I need to paint up another army until then, so the printer is crackelacking as we speak. I decided on an undead/skeleton-host, more on them later as I get them on the paintingtable.
This meant that I had to put a couple completely new projects on hold pretty much as I started them sunday morning. Because ofcourse you get excited and start up new projects when you are at conventions. That's the law.
Me and the other Andreas talked alot about grimdark during our playthru and decided to have a real go at the 30K Epic (imperator-something) once it releases, and as I print rather than buy nowadays I have already started on some boiz from the 3rd Legion to slowly experiment on when it comes to paintingsheme. Most likely purple and gold, with small dabs of black here and there. I played Emperors Children as my first, and always main, army back in 2nd Ed 40K and ofcourse in the old Epic. So it's only natural I go back to my roots again. I will use mostly the sculpts of KMFP Designs and for now I have opted to use their MKII-project marines as a basis for my ordinary tacticool stuff. They do need a small upscaling compared to the boiz with the spicy airhorns (Kakaphoni Marines), but that is a later issue.
Because.
Ofcourse...
Me and the other Johan decided to start up a serious project with the Great Northern War!
We both live smack-dab in the middle of an area rich of local history regarding soldiers who fought with Charles XII so we have been talking about it ever since we got to know each other this summer.
*record scratch*
Ok, alright. What about "the other" Johan and Andreas? Apparently Johan´s and Andreas´ come in pairs nowadays when it comes to wargaming. Johan and Andreas are my wargamingbuddies from the historical side of things that I got to know and started playing with early this summer, both live in Linköping.
The other Johan was the one hosting this event and is very keen on getting into miniature wargaming. he is a boardgame-developer and co-owner of Triturus Games and lives in my small village of Skeda just 15 minutes away. We are also both active in the local history club.
The other Andreas moved to Skeda during the summer and by the magic of social media we found out that we have a common interest in wargaming, we met the first time this saturday and really hit it off.
..back to the GNW!
To make a long story a bit shorter, we are now puttering away on a joint project in the era. We want to create a good campaign-system to play out the GNW-period and are leaning towards an Imagi-Nations-style approach with armies and the timeperiod as a basis. Pretty much a boardgame that resolves the battles on the tabletop. Shoot for the stars, end up in the grantopparna as we say here in Sweden.
The biggest issue we are facing is how to generate scenarios for the tabletop as pretty much all engagements between armies are bound to be assymetric. Ho hum, more to come during the winter.
We wanted to do it in 6mm scale since there is already one russian army in our circles, owned by Andreas. Problem is that there are pretty much no STLs suitable for it, even if I look at WSS-stuff to use as proxies. I'd appretiate any pointers.
For the time being we have decided to do it in 2mm, 60*30 bases. Probably with Forward March Studios models. While being super-basic, they do have the benefit of being able to print on my FDM-printer so the resin one can chug along with Epic, HOTT and some bonus 28mm Orky stuff for the other Andreas.
Also, you can probably paint up a complete army in one or two evenings.
In any case, I have about 2 weeks to paint the undead army. They will hopefully be ready for paint later today, while I plan out some more/new terrain to build aswell.
Cheers
Congrats on recruiting new players👍👍👍. Great effort 😁. Scenarios for your campaign - One Hour Wargames by Neil Thomas has thirty adaptable scenario set ups, giving interesting games. Cheers!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Martin. I will look into OHW for scenario ideas!
DeleteSounds like a successful event, a shame we couldn't come by.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of 6mm GNW, Kristoffer's got armies that are actually painted. Swedes and Danes, perhaps more.
Yeh, he reached out on FB and we talked a bit about the armies.
DeleteMen and Johan will use 2mm while we test out the period and most likely graduate to 6mm eventually.
